Fun Barbeque Facts
For National Barbeque Month, we thought you'd enjoy reading a few fun
facts about our most important all-American past-time.
Factoid No. 1:
Last year, American manufacturers of barbecue grills and accessories
shipped...*
- Over 14 million grills.
- Almost 987 million tons of charcoal briquettes.
- More than 26.7 million pounds of wood chips and chunks.

Factoid No. 2:
Did you know the word "barbecue" has its roots in the Native American
language?
The word barbeque comes from the Native American word "barbacoa", a
framework of green sticks used to skewer food to be cooked over a fire,
a method used by the Spaniards. Some speculate the word comes from the
French word "barb a queue", roughly translated "from head to tail".

Factoid No. 3:
Did you know the first barbecue was most likely hosted by Prometheus?
Prometheus is the mythical figure who stole fire from the gods and gave
it to mankind. Theoretically, this makes him the first one to have had
the power to throw a barbeque. One of the first known grills was found
in 5000 B.C. at Knossos, on the Greek isle of Crete, where King Minos
ruled.

Factoid No. 4:
A recent survey conducted by the Barbecue Industry Association revealed
that:
- About three quarters of all US households own a grill.
- Grill ownership is highest among younger, larger, higher
income families who live in houses.
- Female heads of households (57%) are more likely to make
the decision to barbeque and select the menu.
- Male heads of household (61%) are more likely to do the
cooking.
- Fifty-nine percent (59%) of grill owners own a gas grill.
- Barbequers use their grills an average of five times per
month.
- Fifty-two percent (52%) of all grills are used year-round.
- Use of aromatic smoking woods has increased 75% since 1983.
